Way clear for miffed Maradona as Jose Pekerman steps down

Berlin - The way up to the VIP part of the Berlin stadium was denied to Argentinian legend Diego Maradona Friday - but the way to taking charge of the national side suddenly opened. Argentina coach Jose Pekerman announced after the quarter-finals exit against Germany that he was resigning. 'It's over - it's something that's run its course, and I'm certain I'm not going to continue,' the completely deflated coach said. 'I always was very careful to do the things that need doing at the time they need doing,' said Pekerman, who won three world champions in charge of his country's under-20s side. 'We shouldn't talk any more about it - it's just sad that Argentina is no longer taking part in this World Cup.' Maradona had meanwhile long walked out of the Berlin stadium along with his group of associates, apparently in protest at being offered only an inferior parts of the stands below the VIP area. © 2006 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
