English press antics rile Portuguese
Jun 28, 2006, 17:26 GMT
Marienfeld, Germany - Portugal has banned three English journalists from their camp after a row over newspaper coverage and claims of 'spying' on the Portuguese squad.
The Football Association of Portugal is unhappy with the coverage in the English media, press spokesman Afonso Melo said Wednesday, three days before the sides meet in a quarter-final clash in Gelsenkirchen.
Melo complained that the English press had printed interviews with coach Luiz Felipe Scolari and striker Pauletta although neither of the two had spoken to English reporters.
'The is extremely unfair. If that is the sort of respect the English press shows us then we will repay them in kind,' said the press spokesman, curtailing questions posed by English journalists.
The remarks followed an incident the previous evening when English reporters sneaked into the team's headquarters at Marienfeld, trampling down a fence and hiding in trees to shoot photographs and film the players.
Asked what Portugal feared most, the English fans, the football team, or the press, Pauleta replied: 'We are not afraid of anyone. We just want the respect that we show others.'

The English are the most arrogant and self-deluded people in Europe - (the fundamental reason behind their fans bad behaviour) - and English press louts simply cannot get over their patriotic humiliation after Portugal's manager had the effrontery to turn down the England job when practically begged to take it...!
I live in London - but I do hope (for everyone's sake...!) - that Portugal thrash England tomorrow.
