1958 - France beat West Germany 6-3 in the play-off for third place at the World Cup. Moroccan-born Just Fontaine scores four goals to take his tally for the finals in Sweden to 13 goals in just six matches. His total was only bettered in 1974 when Gerd Mueller scored Germany's second in the final against the Netherlands to take 'Der Bomber's' tally to 14. Brazilian striker Ronaldo equalled Mueller's record Thursday with two goals against Japan.
1994 - Russian Oleg Salenko becomes the first player in World Cup history to score five goals in one match at the finals. Russia beats Cameroon 6-1. In the same game Cameroon's Roger Milla is the oldest player to score at the finals. Milla was 42 years, 39 days old at the time.
1998 - Ebbe Sand scores in Denmark's 4-1 round of the last 16 victory against Nigeria. His goal (Denmark's third) is listed as having been scored 16 seconds after coming on as a substitute - making it the fastest goal scored by a substitute.
1998 - Laurent Blanc scores in the 113th minute of France's round of 16 match against Paraguay to give the hosts a hard-earned, hard- fought 1-0 victory against Paraguay. Referee Samarathna Wickeramatunge immediately blows the final whistle. It was, however, not a mistake from the Sri Lankan as Blanc's goal was the first-ever Golden Goal scored at the World Cup finals. Since then the world controlling body FIFA has scrapped the Golden Goal rule.
