Mueller shrugs off Ronaldo record-breaking threat
Jun 26, 2006, 23:07 GMT
Berlin - Gerd Mueller fully expects Ronaldo to break his World Cup record of 14 goals the Brazilian matched with two goals in their 4-1 win over Japan at these finals.
That moment should come when five-times champions Brazil play Ghana in their second round match in Dortmund on Friday but Mueller, whose scoring feats came in 1970 and 1974, feels no particular attachment to the record.
'Anyway, the real record belongs to Just Fontaine with his 13 goals in one World Cup. That's something I never achieved,' the 60- year-old German said of Frenchman Fontaine's 1958 exploit.
But Der Bomber as he was known believes today's strikers have it easy.
'Back then we had a stopper and sweeper waiting for us,' he says. 'Perhaps if I were playing today I would score more.'
Mueller scored 365 league goals in 427 games, as well as 68 international goals in 62 matches for his country.
