Nuremberg - Referee Valentin Ivanov on Sunday set a new record for the number of cards issued in a World Cup game.
The Russian issued 16 bookings and sent off four players who received two yellow cards in Sunday's ill-tempered round of 16 match between Portugal and Netherlands, which the Portuguese won 1-0 through Maniche's 23rd minute strike.
Ivanov's handling of the game beat the 16 yellow cards and two red cards that Spanish referee Antonio Lopez Nieto issued in the group match between Cameroon and Germany in Shizuoka during the 2002 finals.
The red cards issued to Portugal's Costinha and Deco and for Dutch players Khalid Boulahrouz and Giovanni van Bronckhorst also set up a new record for the highest number of players dismissed in a match.
The previous record of three was set up in 1938 during the match between Brazil against Czechoslovakia and equalled in 1954 (Brazil against Hungary) and 1998 (Denmark against South Africa).
All in all Ivanov pulled out a card 20 times.
The following were booked in the match between Portugal and Netherlands:
Mark van Bommel (NED) 2, Khalid Boulahrouz (NED) 7, Maniche (POR) 20, Costinha (POR) 31, Costinha (POR) 46 (red card 46), Petit (POR) 50, Giovanni van Bronckhorst (NED) 59, Luis Figo (POR) 60, Boulahrouz (NED) 63 (red card 63), Deco (POR) 73, Wesley Sneijder (NED) 73, Rafael van der Vaart (NED) 74, Ricardo (POR) 76, Nuno Valente (POR) 76, Deco (POR) 78 (red card 78), van Bronckhorst (NED) 95 (red card 95).
