Trophies more important than records to Ronaldo

Jun 25, 2006, 19:45 GMT

Bergisch Gladbach, Germany - Brazil striker Ronaldo will happily forfeit a goal scoring record if Brazil can win a sixth World Cup.

'My target is to win the World Cup and if I score goals all the better,' said the 29-year-old whose two goals against Japan in their final group game drew him level with Gerd Mueller's record tally of 14.

'I don't get obsessed about breaking records.'

His first priority is a win over surprise side Ghana in Tuesday's second round clash when the South Americans will be looking for their 200th World Cup goal.

'But beating Ghana is more important than scoring that goal,' added Ronaldo, who was top scorer at the 2002 World Cup when he scored both goals in the 2-0 win over Germany in the final.

Ronaldo accepts the Africans will be no pushover.

'They have been very impressive but we fear no-one,' Ronaldo said. 'They have a lot of quality but we have done our homework. We have prepared well.'

Ronaldo would not say whether he would prefer to have Real Madrid team-mate Robinho or Inter Milan's Adriano as his strike partner.

'We have an excellent squad and the coach can rely on everybody to do a good job. But everybody is in the same boat. If you play you give everything, if you don't you wait for your chance.

'The squad is in very good shape, we are united and confident and every one of us is ready to make sacrifices to win this World Cup.'

But he warned samba fans not to be disappointed if they could not always produce their most exciting football.

'Winning is more important,' he said.
