1954 - Switzerland's Josef Huegi becomes the second player, after Poland's Ernest Wilimowski, to score three goals in a match but still end up on the losing side. Switzerland are beaten 7-5 by Austria in the quarter-finals. Wilimowski had even scored four in Poland's 6-5 defeat against Brazil in 1938. Austria's 7-5 victory remains the highest number of goals scored (12) in a single match at the finals.
1968 - Former Italy captain Paolo Maldini is born. He plays in the 1990, 1994, 1998 and 2002 World Cup finals, appearing in 23 matches. He ranks second behind Lothar Matthaeus in the all-time rankings. Maldini is the son of Cesare Maldini, who played in the 1962 finals, coached Italy at the 1998 finals and Paraguay in 2002.
1975 - Jean-Paul Abalo is born. The Togo defender played in his country's first game at the 2006 finals against South Korea, but was sent off in the 53rd minute and the World Cup rookies, who sensationally knocked out Senegal in the qualifiers, went on to lose the game 2-1.
2003 - Cameroon's Marc-Vivien Foe dies during a Confederations Cup match in Lyon. The attacking midfielder was later found to have suffered a heart defect. Foe, who was played for Olympique Lyon and in the Premiership for Manchester City and West Ham, played in the 1998 and 2002 World Cup finals.
