1950 - Mexico goalkeeper Antonio Carbajal plays his first match at the finals of the World Cup. Although Mexico loses 4-0 against the hosts Brazil, it is the beginning of a lengthy World Cup career for the goalkeeper, who in 1966 becomes the first player to have played at five World Cup finals. He is joined in 1998 by Lothar Matthaeus of Germany. However, he plays just 11 matches as Mexico are knocked out in the first round more often than not.
1950 - The Estadio Indepedencia in Belo Horizonte is opened and stages the first match of the 1950 World Cup, as Yugoslavia beat Switzerland in Group 1.
1978 - Argentina win the final against the Netherlands in Buenos Aires, 3-1 after extra time. The competition is still remembered as the most 'political' of World Cups after the ruling military junta used the competition for their own ends, with Argentina's victory playing right into their hands.
1982 - In one of the most outrageous acts of unsporting behaviour ever seen on the football field, Germany beat Austria 1-0 in a Group 2 match played in Gijon. After losing to Algeria in their first group game at the tournament, Germany beat Chile in their second. Austria had won their first two, but as FIFA had scheduled the matches in such a way that Algeria played their final group game the day before, Germany and Austria knew exactly what score they needed for both to advance. Knowing that a victory by one or two goals for Germany in their final group game against the Austrians would see both sides through, the teams practically stop playing after Horst Hrubesch scored for Germany in the 10th minute.
