Iranian team arrives in Teheran - heavy security at Tehran airport

Tehran - The Iranian national football team arrived back in Tehran Friday night after a disappointing performance at the World Cup. In order to prevent protests by angry fans, an estimated 100 police were stationed at the international Mehrabad airport. Apart from the sports channel of the IRIB state television network, police did not allow any reporters or photographers, even the local media, to get inside the airport. Offenders were threatened by police with press card confiscation. ISNA news agency termed the police deployment and the heavy security as meaningless, as there was no sign of any fans at the airport. The Iranian team, widely regarded as the best in the country's football history, finished last in Group D with only one point from a draw against Angola. The Iranian sports organisation has already fired Iranian Football Federation (FFI) President Mohammad Dadkan and would have also sacked coach Branco Ivankovic, but the Croatian resigned right after Wednesday's game against Angola. © 2006 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
