Injured Rooney to miss England's group games after scan results
May 26, 2006, 13:25 GMT
London - Striker Wayne Rooney will definitely miss England's three group games at next month's World Cup after a scan on his injured foot revealed he will not be able to begin training for at least three weeks.
The Manchester United striker broke his foot on April 29 and faces a race against time to be fit for any part of England's World Cup campaign.
United said on Friday that the 20-year-old will only learn when he will be able to begin training again after another scan on June 14, four days after England's opening World Cup match against Paraguay.
If the June 14 scan gives Rooney the green light to resume training, he would have just 10 days to get fit for a last-16 match, should England qualify.
Under Fifa rules, England can replace any member of their 23-man squad up to 24 hours before their opening match.
Coach Sven Goran Eriksson has previously said Rooney would remain in the squad even if there was a chance he would only be fit to play in the final itself.
