Neo-Nazis plan pro-Iran parade at World Cup: report

Hamburg - Neo-Nazis plan to use the World Cup to gain publicity for their extreme right-wing ideology, the news magazine Der Spiegel reported on Saturday. The report said the extremists plan to hold a rally when Iran play Angola in order to demonstrate their sympathy for Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The Iranian leader has been widely condemned by the international community for casting doubt on the Holocaust and denying Israel's right to exist. Der Spiegel said neo-Nazis were promoting the rally on the internet. The Iran-Angola match takes place June 21 in the eastern city of Leipzig. Another demonstration is planned in the city of Gelsenkirchen on June 10, the day after the start of the World Cup, the report said. The chairman of the German police union, Konrad Freiberg, appealed to judicial authorities to ban all demonstrations in the vicinity of football stadiums while the month-long World Cup is in progress. © 2006 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
