New York, NY - Dan Hughes transformed the San Antonio Silver Stars from a below .500 club into a team on the doorstep of the WNBA Finals, and for his efforts he was named the recipient of the 2007 WNBA Coach of the Year award on Saturday.
Hughes took home his second honor, the second head coach to win the award multiple times, while taking the Silver Stars to the Western Conference finals following a 20-14 record in the regular season, a stark improvement from the previous season's 13-21 mark. The 20 regular-season victories matched the franchise record set in 2002.
Hughes was placed at the top of 20 ballots, six more than Phoenix Mercury head coach Paul Westhead and 14 more than Detroit's Bill Laimbeer. Others to receive votes included New York Liberty head coach Patty Coyle, Chicago Sky head coach Bo Overton, Washington's Tree Rollins, Sacramento head coach Jenny Boucek and Seattle's Anne Donovan.
