New York, NY - New York Liberty center Janel McCarville has been named the WNBA's Most Improved Player for the 2007 campaign.
In her third season, McCarville posted career highs in nearly all categories, including points (10.4), rebounds (4.8) and steals (1.2) in 21.2 minutes per game.
McCarville, who watched her playing time increase dramatically in the final 21 contests of the regular season, finished as New York's top rebounder (4.75 rpg) and third-leading scorer (10.4 ppg). She also helped to orchestrate an incredible turnaround as the Liberty rebounded from its worst season in franchise history to earn a spot in the 2007 WNBA playoffs.
Chosen by Charlotte as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 WNBA Draft, McCarville is the second Liberty player to receive the Most Improved Player award. Tari Phillips earned the inaugural award in 2000.
McCarville received 33 first place votes from a national panel of sportswriters and broadcasters. Sacramento Monarchs forward Rebekkah Brunson finished second with seven votes and Liberty guard Loree Moore was third with two votes.
