Uncasville, CT - Monique Currie drained a desperation three- point shot with one-tenth of a second remaining, as Washington defeated Connecticut, 76-74, at Mohegan Sun Arena.
With 21 seconds remaining and the Sun holding a one-point lead, Washington's Alana Beard attempted to drive toward the basket, but was forced to push the ball out to Currie, who was camped just beyond the arc and got off a last- second shot. The Mystics bench erupted when it found the back of the net with 0.1 seconds showing on the game clock.
The Mystics needed the win to even have even a chance at grabbing the fourth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. They were left out of the postseason, however, when New York beat Chicago, 58-52, later in the afternoon.
Beard scored a team-high 21 points and dished out five assists for Washington, which won two of its last three and six of nine overall to close the season.
DeLisha Milton finished with 18 points, Nakia Sanford had a huge game with 14 points and 15 rebounds, and Currie ended with 13 points for the Mystics, who shot 41 percent in the contest.
Katie Douglas finished with 21 points to guide the Sun, who have already been locked into the third spot in the East, but have dropped four of their last six games heading into the playoffs and a first-round battle with the Indiana Fever.
Lindsay Whalen had 19 points and dished out seven assists, and Nykesha Sales donated 17 points for Connecticut, which was once again without the services of All-Star forward Asjha Jones due to a high-ankle sprain.
The Mystics trailed 26-16 after the first quarter and 49-38 at the half. They stormed back, however, and outscored Connecticut 26-14 in the third before battling to the finish.
