Auburn Hills, MI - Tina Thompson scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Houston Comets to an 81-73 win over the Detroit Shock at the Palace of Auburn Hills.
Thompson also recorded nine rebounds while Michelle Snow added 13 points for the Comets, who improved to 4-2 in the month of August but will not qualify for the postseason. Hamchetou Maiga-Ba added 10 points in the win.
Deanna Nolan paced the Shock with 20 points and Katie Smith added 16 points in the losing effort. Detroit, which has now dropped two straight following a six-game win streak, has already clinched the Eastern Conference title. Plenette Pierson added 13 points and eight rebounds in the loss.
The contest was close most of the way, but Houston pulled away in the fourth quarter and outscored Detroit 21-14 in the final period to seal the win. Houston shot 44.1 percent from the field (30-of-68) and made good on 18-of-20 from the charity stripe.
