Washington, DC - Alana Beard poured in 28 points as the Washington Mystics edged the Connecticut Sun, 65-64, at the Verizon Center.
Coco Miller added 15 points for the Mystics, who are 1 1/2 games ahead of the New York Liberty for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The Mystics host the Liberty on Thursday night.
Margo Dydek scored 17 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked three shots for the Sun, who lost for just the third time in fourteen games. Lindsay Whalen deposited 13 points, Asjha Jones 11 and Katie Douglas 10 for Connecticut, which has already clinched a playoff berth.
Beard's pull-up jumper with 1:08 remaining gave the Mystics a 65-62 lead before Dydek's running jumper with 55 seconds to go pulled Connecticut within one. The Mystics missed two shots giving the Sun a chance, but Douglas' shot from the left wing with two seconds to go was off the mark.
