Los Angeles, CA - Penny Taylor led all scorers with 23 points and drained two free throws with 11 ticks to play, leading Phoenix past Los Angeles, 96-93, at Staples Center.
Diana Taurasi collected 21 points, seven rebounds and six assists while Cappie Pondexter donated 17 points for the Mercury, who vaulted past San Antonio into first place in the Western Conference.
Kiesha Brown had a career-high 18 points off the bench and Taj McWilliams- Franklin also scored 18 points with eight rebounds for Los Angeles.
The Sparks trailed by as many as 16 points in the opening half, but took a 77-71 advantage on the heels of a 10-0 stretch to start the fourth.
However, Phoenix rallied with Taylor's three-point play pushing the Mercury in front 93-92 with just under one minute on the clock. After Temeka Johnson tied the score with a free throw, Taurasi made 1-of-2 from the charity stripe and Taylor sank a pair with 11 seconds left.
Sidney Spencer's three was blocked by Tangela Smith and Taurasi corralled the rebound to preserve the win.
