Taurasi, Beard named WNBA Players of the Week

New York, NY - Alana Beard of the Washington Mystics and Diana Taurasi of the Phoenix Mercury were named the WNBA Players of the Week on Monday for the week ending August 5.
Beard, who received the Eastern Conference honor, averaged 19 points, five rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 2.3 steals as the Mystics went 2-1 on the week.
Taurasi, who earned her fifth weekly honor overall and second this season, averaged 23.7 points, three rebounds and three assists as the Mercury also posted a 2-1 record.
The league-leader in three-point field goals made, Taurasi knocked down four on her way to 19 points in a 76-74 Mercury victory over Houston July 31.
Other candidates for Players of the Week were Connecticut's Katie Douglas, Detroit's Plenette Pierson, Indiana's Tamika Whitmore, Sacramento's Yolando Griffith, San Antonio's Sophia Young and Shanna Crossley, and Lauren Jackson and Betty Lennox of Seattle.
