Detroit outlasts New York in OT
Jul 18, 2007, 19:30 GMT
Auburn Hills, MI - Deanna Nolan scored 21 points and Cheryl Ford contributed 19 points with 18 rebounds, as the Detroit Shock pulled away in overtime and earned an 87-82 victory over the New York Liberty at the Palace.
Detroit won its fourth straight game despite the absence of All-Star center Kara Braxton, who sat out with a sprained ankle. Swin Cash chipped in 19 points for the Shock.
Janel McCarville and Ashley Battle each scored 17 points to lead New York, which has lost two in a row.
The game was tied at 70-70 after each team missed chances in the final minute of regulation, but the Shock opened the extra session with an 8-2 run. Katie Smith converted a three-point play to fuel the burst and a Nolan jumper capped the spurt to give Detroit a 78-72 edge with just over three minutes to play.
New York led 17-14 after the first quarter and 39-33 at halftime, but Detroit trimmed the deficit to one heading into the fourth in a game that featured eight ties and 18 lead changes.
