Sun slip past Monarchs in OT

Sacramento, CA - Lindsay Whalen forced overtime and scored eight of her 22 points in the extra session, leading Connecticut to an 82-78 win over the Sacramento Monarchs.
Nykesha Sales had 23 points and Whalen had eight assists for the Sun, who have won three in a row to tie a season-high.
Katie Douglas scored 14 points and Le'coe Willingham tallied 10 points, nine boards and six blocks for Connecticut.
Nicole Powell and Adrian Williams had 15 points for the Monarchs, who lost their second straight.
Ahead 67-65, the Monarchs had a chance to seal the win, but La'Tangela Atkinson missed two free throws with 7.6 seconds left in regulation.
The Sun got the ball back and Whalen tied it with a layup with 4.1 seconds to go, sending the game into overtime. She then took over in OT, and her two free throws gave the visitors the lead for good at 73-72 with 2:44 remaining. Whalen added a jumper with 52.9 seconds left.
Kara Lawson cut Sacramento's deficit to 80-78 with a three-pointer with 8.4 seconds to go, but Sales drained two free throws to seal the win for the Sun.
This was the league's last game leading to the All-Star break. The midseason contest will be Sunday in Washington.
