New York, NY - Detroit's Katie Smith and San Antonio's Becky Hammon were named the WNBA's top players for the week ending Sunday, June 24.
Smith earned the Eastern Conference honor after averaging 18.5 points, 4.3 assists, 4.3 rebounds and 1.3 steals in four games for the Shock last week. Smith posted 18 points, nine rebounds and nine assists in a win over Los Angeles and scored a game-high 23 points in a victory over Seattle.
Detroit holds the league's top overall record (10-2), the best 12-game start in franchise history and the second best start in WNBA history.
Hammon captured the Western Conference award for the second time this season, averaging 19 points and five assists as the Silver Stars won all three of their games on the week. In a come-from-behind victory over the New York Liberty, with whom she spent the last eight seasons, Hammon tallied 19 points, six rebounds and four assists.
Other candidates for this week's awards included Indiana's Tamika Catchings, New York's Shameka Christon, Sacramento's Kara Lawson and Washington's Alana Beard.
