Johnson pushes Shock past Mercury
Jun 23, 2007, 4:45 GMT
Phoenix, AZ - Shannon Johnson scored 23 points, as the Detroit Shock overcame a 16-point third-quarter deficit to down the Phoenix Mercury, 87-84, on Friday.
Detroit scoring 10 straight points and the Mercury missing 12 of their first 14 fourth-quarter shots allowed the Shock to edge an 81-80 margin with three minutes to go in the fourth quarter.
Plenette Pierson posted 15 points and 11 rebounds and hit a bucket with 1:50 remaining that put Detroit ahead for good. Kara Braxton had 17 points and 12 rebounds for the Shock, who won their third straight.
Penny Taylor posted 23 points and 10 rebounds for the Mercury, who have dropped three of four. Diana Taurasi added 15 points and eight assists in the loss.
Both squads were without their second-leading scorers, as Detroit's Cheryl Ford sat out with a left ankle sprain and Phoenix's Cappie Pondexter missed her second straight game with a strained left groin.
