From Monsters and Critics.com Tennis White Plains, NY - United States captain Zina Garrison announced on Monday that Venus Williams will play in the Fed Cup quarterfinal against Belgium in April. The Americans and 2006 runner-up Belgians will square off at the Delray Beach Tennis Center in Florida from April 21-22. The former world No. 1 Williams, a five-time Grand Slam singles champion, missed the 2007 Australian Open due to a left wrist injury. 'Venus is ready to return to competition and we are excited that she is eager to come back to the U.S. Fed Cup team,' Garrison said. Williams is 13-3 overall in Fed Cup play (10-2 singles; 3-1 in doubles). She made her Fed Cup debut in the 1999 semifinals and helped the U.S. win the title that year. Williams' last appearance in Fed Cup came in the 2005 semifinals at Russia the week after she won Wimbledon, her last major singles title. The Americans are 5-1 when Williams plays. © 2007 The Sports Network © Copyright 2007 by monstersandcritics.com. This notice cannot be removed without permission. |
