Sloppy translation put erroneous words in Federer's mouth

Feb 13, 2012, 16:55 GMT

Rotterdam, Netherlands - Roger Federer will carry on in Rotterdam after a weekend Davis Cup loss to the United States, with the Swiss shrugging off a mis-translation from French which made him sound critical of teammate Stanislas Wawrinka.

Federer's calm analysis of his doubles defeat alongside his Beijing Olympic gold-medal partner was: 'I played a good doubles, and Stan not a bad one.'

But once the remark got into English the 'not a bad one' erroneously became 'a bad one.'

Federer said that the situation is now fine.

'The Stan comment was taken completely the wrong way. I'd never say that, and I'll move on quickly. I spoke with both (captain) Severin (Luthi) and Stan to make sure there is no misunderstanding.'

After the initial uproar, normalcy returned as Federer arrived Monday with his family for the ABN Amro World Tennis, the event run by former Wimbledon winner Richard Krajicek which the Swiss last played - and won - in 2005.

The top seed begins on Wednesday against Nicolas Mahut as he plays the tournament for the seventh time.

The event marks the midway point of a busy February for Federer, who will compete at his 'home' event in Dubai from February 27.

'I'm feeling healthy and have had no problems with my back (pain) from Doha. I'm perfectly fine after Davis Cup,' said the only member of the ATP elite to put in a full schedule this month.

'Now that we don't have the Davis Cup, that makes scheduling in 2012 a lot easier. I need to wrap my mind about my schedule and what I want to do in the next weeks. It's all under control, I'm back in form and completely fit this week.'
