Sharapova climbs to second behind Azarenka in WTA rankings

Berlin - Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka of Belarus retained first place in the women's tennis rankings issued on Monday by the WTA while Russian Maria Sharapova moved into second despite a surprise defeat last week.
Azarenka has 8,585 points and Sharapova has 7,680 to move ahead of Czech Petra Kvitova (7,320). Sharapova was upset in the Paris Indoors quarter-finals last week by German Angelique Kerber who went on to win the title.
