Wozniacki unworried by demotion from number one spot
Jan 24, 2012, 6:53 GMT
Melbourne - Caroline Wozniacki was barely ruffled after a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) quarter-final loss Tuesday at the Australian Open dropped her from the WTA number one ranking.
The 21-year-old Dane who spent 67 weeks atop the table and finished at the leading place at the end of the 2010 and 2011 seasons, took her medicine with smiling grace after the loss to Melbourne holder Kim Clijsters.
'To be honest, I don't really think about it,' she said of the demotion. 'I've been there for a long time already. At the end of the year, we will see who played the best, ... most consistently all year round. I'll get it back eventually, so I'm not worried.'
The new top player would come from Czech Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova, third seed Victoria Azarenka or Maria Sharapova, according to WTA calculations.
Wozniacki said she is amused when she is written off as a force in the game at her young age.
'I start laughing every time because the media talks to me like I'm finishing my career and I only have one year left and time is running out,' she said. 'The fact is I still have quite a few good years in front of me. I still improve.'
'I'll definitely do my best and try to win one or even more Grand Slams,' she said. '... I will come back not only once but more times.'
