NOTEBOOK: Injured Roddick won't play Davis Cup against Switzerland
Jan 20, 2012, 3:16 GMT
Melbourne - He might not have been on the selection shortlist, but Andy Roddick's reaggravated hamstring injury that forced him to quit his Australian Open match against Lleyton Hewitt has definitively ruled him out of next month's Davis Cup.
The United States travel to Switzerland for the February 10-12 first-round tie, but it is be without the 29-year-old who anchored the team until 2011.
Roddick had to quit his second-round clash with Hewitt Thursday at the start of the fourth set after taking treatment and trying to play on.
After explaining the circumstances of the right hamstring injury - he first suffered with it during December training - Roddick said he's out for at least three weeks of rest.
He also voiced annoyance with his constant run of injuries and illness over the past few seasons.
'It's frustrating. It's discouraging,' he said. 'Your sensible mind says to have a sense of perspective; you still have it pretty good. The competitor in you feels terrible and wants to break stuff.
'I had 10 years pretty much of a clean slate. That's a lot more than most people get. The last two years have been pretty tough. It's tough physically. It's as tough mentally, though.' *** ****************** Baghdatis racquet-smash epic going viral
Melbourne (dpa) - The racquet smash of 2006 Australian Open finalist Marcos Baghdatis is starting to go viral on YouTube with the outburst set to join classic on-court dummy spits from the likes of John McEnroe and Marcelo Rios.
The normally smiling Cypriot copped a fine of more than 1,000 dollars for trashing four sticks Wednesday in less than 30 seconds - the third one was still wrapped in plastic when he cracked the frame before allowing a wry grin to emerge.
The incident came as the crowd favourite went down to Swiss Stan Wawrinka in the second round.
Canadian Milos Raonic said he would not try the do the same.
'I have 10 racquets; I need to play with 10 racquets,' said the 21-year-old who made his big-match breakthrough at the event a year ago. 'I don't have any to break. Last year, I played the first half of the year with three racquets and the second half of the year with four racquets.
'That also made me settle down with the breaking racquets,' the player born in Montenegro said. 'Now I I have a few more racquets, but I don't feel the habit or anger to break them.'
While he said he tries not to indulge in the practice himself, Raonic was quick to name his nominations for the frame-cracking hall of fame: 'I think [Goran] Ivanisevic and [Marat] Safin are right up there. Loved watching them.'
