Petkovic out of Australian Open with back problem
Jan 11, 2012, 3:07 GMT
Melbourne - German Andrea Petkovic, a quarter-finalist last year, was Wednesday forced to withdraw from the Australian Open with a back injury, officials said.
Tournament director Craig Tiley tweeted: 'Don't like to be the bearer of bad news, but Petkovic has withdrawn.'
The tenth-seeded German was the second major name to pull out in 24 hours after Venus Williams announced that she would not play due to illness and a lack of form.
'Sorry to announce that I had to withdraw from the Australian Open with a lower back stress fracture,' tweeted Petkovic. 'Going back home, will miss my Aussie fans!'
Petkovic lost her quarter-final a year ago to Li Na at Melbourne Park, going on to play quarters at Roland Garros and the US Open.
Germany's top-ranked player led last year's breakthrough of Teutonic talent in tennis, with number 15 Sabine Lisicki and 23rd-ranked Julia Goerges following Petkovic with improved form.
