Dec 13, 2011, 16:16 GMT
Sofia - Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic was elected the Balkan athlete of the year in a poll conducted by the Bulgarian news agency BTA and published Tuesday.
Djokovic, who ended the year on top of the ATP list after claiming three out of the four Grand Slam titles - in Melbourne, London and New York - had 91 points in the survey.
The Serb compiled a string of 43 victories spanning from November 2010 before succumbing to Roger Federer in the semifinal of the French Open in June, conceding only 10 sets.
Croatian skier and overall 2011 world champion Ivica Kostelic was second with 61 points.
The poll, which BTA runs annually since 1973 among sport reporters from 11 countries in the region, placed Bulgarian long distance swimmer Petar Stoychev in third place, with 40 points.
The 2010 winner was Bulgarian wrestler Stanka Zlateva.
