Serena Williams a no-show for Asia
Sep 26, 2010, 4:00 GMT
Tokyo - Serena Williams has pulled the plug on an autumn Asian swing, leaving the world number one with just six events played since the start of an abbreviated season.
The American surprised no one when she withdrew this week from the Pan Pacific in Tokyo and then left Chinese organisers hanging with a pullout from the Beijing event which follows.
The official reason is healing time for a foot injury which required surgery. The incident which caused the problem has never been fully explained, with the Williams handlers only saying she cut her foot on glass in a European restaurant the week after winning Wimbledon.
The 29-year-old managed to front up for an exhibition in Belgium a few days later against Kim Clijsters before dropping from tennis view, though she's been a regular at fashion and show business events since.
Her latest appearance was only days ago at London Fashion Week.
