Wozniacki takes hard road into year-end semi-finals

Doha, Qatar - US Open finalist Caroline Wozniacki booked the first of the semi-final places at the Sony Ericsson Championships Thursday, winning a gruelling, physical struggle against substitute Vera Zvonareava which was marked by fitness issues. Dane Wozniacki produced a fighting 6-0 6-7 6-4 against the Russian, who substituted as compatriot Dinara Safin was forced to withdraw with back problems on Wednesday, which also cost her the year-end No 1 ranking. Wozniacki, fourth in the world, suffered with cramping as she played her sixth hour so far this week. Zvonareva was treated for a second-set nosebleed in the two-hour, 48-minute struggle in the Gulf. Wozniacki nearly lost her form when cramps sent her to the floor late in the match. But the teenager soldiered on to earn a third match point and ultimately claim the tightly-wound contest. Her 2-0 record in round-robin play propelled her into the weekend final four with one match to play against Serb Jelena Jankovic.
