Roddick to return in Washington as battered Blake pulls out
Jul 31, 2009, 18:29 GMT
Washington - Andy Roddick is set to play for the first time in a month at Washington's Legg Mason Classic that begins Monday in his first appearance since his heartbreaking Wimbledon finals loss to Roger Federer.
But the event held just three weeks before the start of the US Open has already lost three entries due to injury.
Former champions James Blake (2002) and Arnaud Clement (2006) are out hurt, with Blake still suffering physical and mental scars from two Davis Cup losses this month in Croatia.
Also missing will be France's Gael Monfils, still nursing the wrist injury which has kept him idle since withdrawing in the second round Queen's Club, London, nearly two months ago.
Czech Radek Stepanek is carrying a knee injury, which bothered him at Wimbledon, and will not play.
Roddick heads a field that includes Argentine holder Juan Del Potro, Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Chile's number 11 Fernando Gonzalez.
