Confidence boost helps Serena overhaul Venus at Wimbledon (Roundup)

London - Serena Williams had to quickly build confidence against her fellow Wimbledon-champion sister as she defeated Venus 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 to end a six-year personal title drought at the All England club Saturday. The junior Williams, aged 27 to the 29 of her five-time champion sibling, won her 11th Grand Slam title in just under two hours after a tight first set and a breakaway second. But the repeat champion said that she didn't head into the contest with anything assured. 'This is one of the few times I didn't expect to come out with the win today, I felt like I had nothing to lose,' said Serena, who lost the 2008 final against her sister. 'I defended every point that I had from last year. I felt like all I had to do is go out there and do my best, just stay even, because she's such a good player. 'When I won that first set, I was like, 'Wow, this is great. No matter what, I'm a set away.' So I was just trying to relax.' The standout Florida pair have now won eight of the ten Wimbledon editions contested this decade. The only other champions since the turn of the century were Maria Sharapova in 2004 and Amelie Mauresmo two years later. The lone final this decade which did not include a sister was 2006 when Mauresmo beat Justine Henin. Serena, seeded second to her sister's third, improved her record against her relative in Grand Slam finals to 6-2. 'It definitely wasn't easy. First of all, she's a great player, especially on this surface, especially out there on that court. 'Also she's my sister, someone that I want to see win and do well at all times. Serena now stands 11-10 in her rivalry with her sister and has won three of the last four majors. 'It feels so amazing to have the trophy again,' said the winner of a contest lasting for just under 90 minutes. 'I can't believe I'm holding it and Venus isn't. 'It hasn't settled in yet that I won.' The winner stand 11-3 in major finals while Venus dropped to 7-7. 'The match is over, but I tried my best today,' said Venus. 'She played so well, really lifted her game. I had an error here and there, and today I couldn't make errors. 'She just played really well today. I also think I played well, too. But she just seemed to play a little bit better.' The defeat marked the first time since 2007 at Wimbledon that Venus had lost a set after establishing a run of 34 straight. The first set went into a tiebreaker with Serena taking it on a lob winner. In the second, the younger sibling broke away for 5-2 as the form of Venus dropped. But the holder saved three championship points before finally netting a backhand, her 18th unforced error.
