Madrid - David Nalbandian has laid down a threat to the Argentine Federation, saying he may have to ponder whether to play the Davis Cup final next month against Spain.
The world number seven is angry as a war over apparent domestic influence in the sport boils over after Nalbandian's hometown of Cordoba was rejected as a venue for the November 21-23 final.
On Friday, the International Tennis Federation decided that Mar del Plata, another candidate, would be the site for the indoor clash with the visiting side led by Rafael Nadal.
'We will have to see if I play,' said Nalbandian, weekend champion at Stockholm who is defending his Madrid Masters title this week.
Nalbandian told the Clarin newspaper that it seemed odd that wishes by the players and captain Alberto Mancini to play at 400 metres altitude in Cordoba to deny at least some chance to Nadal were over-ruled.
'Playing at Mar del Plata hurts our chances, we had the chance to gain a sporting edge,' said a disappointed Nalbandian.
In order to keep Spain away from their favored clay, the tie will be on fast indoor hard court, a surface where Nalbandian excels, lifting Masters titles last year in Madrid and Paris Bercy.
'The Argentine association leaves much to be desired,' said the South American. 'I've made sacrifices to play Davis Cup and what they are doing is not very pretty to see.
'I just hope that the association continues to support the players like they have said - if not, we will see if I play in the tie.'
The Spanish team expressed shock at the bitter turn to the dispute, but are more concerned with concentrating on their own chances in the final. dpa bs jb
