Nadal tops Federer on half-clay, half-grass court
May 2, 2007, 20:15 GMT
Palma de Mallorca, Balearic Islands - Rafael Nadal defeated Roger Federer, once again, this time on a half-clay, half-grass court in an exhibition match on Wednesday.
The two-time French Open champion Nadal, who hails from Manacor, Mallorca, bested the four-time Wimbledon winner Federer 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (12-10) on a special court that was prepared in 19 days for $1.63 million. Federer blew a 4-1 lead in the deciding tiebreak.
The two superstars played before a sellout crowd of 7,000.
The grass side of the court produced some awkward bounces on Wednesday, and both players changed shoes before moving to the other side of the clay/grass court.
Nadal beat the 10-time Grand Slam champion Federer in the recent clay-court Monte Carlo Masters final, moving his lifetime record against the great Swiss to 7-3, including 5-0 on clay. Federer is 1-0 in their lone meeting on grass, which came in last year's Wimbledon final.
