Injured Sharapova will skip Charleston, Fed Cup

Amelia Island, FL - U.S. Open champion Maria Sharapova will miss next week's event in Charleston and the upcoming Fed Cup quarterfinals due to shoulder and hamstring injuries.The 19-year-old Russian, a two-time Grand Slam champion, was scheduled to make her Fed Cup debut against Spain from April 21-22, but, instead, injuries will keep her sidelined for the next five-to-six weeks.'I am very disappointed to have to withdraw from the Family Circle Cup,' Sharapova said. 'It is really difficult for me to miss top events like the Family Circle Cup, but I need to make sure that I get myself healthy enough to play.'The former world No. 1 and currently second-ranked Sharapova lost badly to Serena Williams in January's Australian Open final and was dismantled by the American once again last week in Miami.© 2007 The Sports Network
