Federer ousted in Miami

Mar 28, 2007, 6:35 GMT

Miami, FL - Top-ranked Roger Federer was sent home by Guillermo Canas Tuesday at the $3.45 million Sony Ericsson Open, the second of nine Masters Series events this year.

Canas, who stunned Federer at Indian Wells earlier this month, outlasted the Swiss 7-6 (7-2), 2-6, 7-6 (7-5) to advance to the quarterfinals. Just two weeks ago, Canas was responsible for Federer's 41-match win streak ending.

Canas is just the fifth player in ATP Tour history to record consecutive victories over Federer, who lost just two matches all last season on the hardcourt.

The reigning Australian Open, Wimbledon and U.S. Open champion Federer was the two-time defending Miami champ, including a title match victory over Ivan Ljubicic here last year. He topped Rafael Nadal in the 2005 final and was the runner-up here in 2002.

In other action, the third-seeded Andy Roddick topped 13th-seeded Spaniard David Ferrer 7-5, 6-3 on Day 7 at Crandon Park. The American Roddick served up seven aces and broke Ferrer's serve three times in a 1-hour, 26-minute affair.

The 2006 U.S. Open runner-up Roddick, who captured this Miami event in 2004, should have his hands full with 12th-seeded Brit Andy Murray in the quarterfinals. The American star is still seeking his first title of the year.

A rapidly-rising Murray continued his recent run of quality play by overcoming Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu 2-6, 7-5, 6-3. The 19-year-old Murray has won 15 of his last 17 matches, including a title in San Jose last month. He's reached at least the semifinals in his last three events and four of his five tournaments so far this season and ousted Roddick in a semifinal in San Jose.

Sixth-seeded Spaniard Tommy Robredo snuck into the round of eight with a hard- fought 7-6 (7-4), 5-7, 7-6 (7-3) victory over 24th-seeded Czech Radek Stepanek.
