Jan 22, 2007, 19:47 GMT
Melbourne, Australia - Two-time champion Serena Williams and aspiring No. 1 Nicole Vaidisova will play their quarterfinal matches Tuesday at the Australian Open.
An unseeded Williams will take on 16th-seeded Israeli Shahar Peer, while a 10th-seeded Vaidisova will encounter her upstart countrywoman Lucie Safarova, who upended 2006 Aussie Open champion Amelie Mauresmo here over the weekend.
The former world No. 1 Williams is 1-0 lifetime against the capable Peer, with the victory coming on a hardcourt in Miami two years ago.
The seven-time Grand Slam champion Williams captured the Aussie Open in 2003 and 2005.
The world No. 12 Vaidisova is 2-1 all-time against her fellow Czech Safarova, including a victory at last year's French Open.
Tuesday's victors will square off in the semifinals here.
The other quarterfinals will be held on Wednesday, when top-seeded Maria Sharapova will tangle with her 12th-seeded fellow Russian Anna Chakvetadze and fourth-seeded Belgian Kim Clijsters will meet sixth-seeded Swiss Martina Hingis.
