Melbourne, Australia - Top-seeded/world No. 1 Roger Federer won his 31st straight tennis match by breezing past Swede Jonas Bjorkman, 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 in the second round at the Australian Open Wednesday.
Federer, who is trying for a 10th career grand slam title, already has two championships in Melbourne, including last year. Federer, who also currently holds the Wimbledon, U.S. Open and Tennis Masters Cup titles, moved to 5-0 all-time against Bjorkman. That includes a victory over the Swede in the semifinals at Wimbledon last year.
Sixth-seeded American Andy Roddick, last year's U.S. Open runner-up to Federer, moved into the third round with a three-set win over Frenchman Marc Gicquel, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4. Roddick defeated Federer in the final at last week's pre-Aussie Open exhibition tournament at Kooyong.
In other early results Wednesday, 14th seed Novak Djokovic of Serbia routed Spaniard Feliciano Lopez, 6-2, 7-5, 6-1 and 16th seed David Ferrer defeated Thomas Johansson, 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-2.
The heat, which forced a majority of the afternoon matches to be delayed until sundown Tuesday, backed off Wednesday.
