Venus pulls out of Aussie Open

Melbourne, Australia - Venus Williams will miss the 2007 Australian Open due to a left wrist injury.The oft-injured Williams was plagued by ailments last year, forcing her to appear in only two matches after Wimbledon. Her inactivity has dropped the former world No. 1 down to 48th in the WTA Tour rankings.The five-time Grand Slam champion Williams lost to her younger sister Serena in the 2003 Aussie Open final. She has never captured the Aussie or French Opens and was an opening-round loser against little-known Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova in Melbourne a year ago. This will mark the first time that Venus has missed the Aussie Open since 2000.World No. 1 Justine Henin-Hardenne pulled out of Melbourne last week.The Aussie Open will commence next Monday.© 2007 The Sports Network
