Jankovic comes up a winner to start 2007 season

Auckland - Serb Jelena Jankovic buried the demons of a slow start a year ago as she won her first title in her starting event of the season on Saturday at the ASB Classic. The player who won only a single match from January until mid-May in 2006 salted away her second WTA-level title after Budapest in 2004. But the 12th-ranked Jankovic had to struggle through a tiebreak marathon to post a win over Russian Vera Zvonareva 7-6 (11-9), 5-7, 6-3, taking two and three-quarters hours. A troublesome wind contributed a a lofty unforced error count as the first set lasted for more than an hour. Jankovic advanced on her second match point. 'I'm speechless, I came here so late and didn't know what to expect from this tournament, and here I am holding this trophy,' said the overjoyed winner. It was the second loss in the Auckland final for Zvonareva, who lost to France's Marion Bartoli a year ago. 'Jankovic played unbelievable, she deserved to win,' said the finalist.
