Sharapova will play at Pan Pacific

Tokyo, Japan - U.S. Open champion Maria Sharapova informed tournament officials that she will play in next year's Pan Pacific Open.The world No. 2 Russian star captured the event in 2005 and will be among a trio of top-10 players in Tokyo. Seventh-ranked Martina Hingis and No. 8 Elena Dementieva have also committed to the $1.34 million tournament. The Russian Dementieva topped the four-time titlist Hingis, of Switzerland, in last year's final here.The Pan Pacific Open will be staged from January 30-February 4 at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.© 2006 The Sports Network
