Slumping Williams looks to Tasmania to rehab her game
Nov 3, 2006, 14:19 GMT
Hobart, Tasmania - Slumping former world number 1 Serena Williams, who played in just four tournaments in 2006, will begin 2007 at a tiny WTA event in Tasmania.
But the winner of seven Grand Slam titles may need a wild card to enter even that modest Tier IV field, lowest on the WTA circuit.
With a box office boost almost guaranteed on the island, officials won't let the American's number 92 ranking stand in the way.
'It's terrific news that the Hobart International will be able to showcase a marquee player like Serena at the 2007 event,' said Craig Tiley of Tennis Australia.
'Depending on what the ranking cut-off for main draw direct acceptance is, Serena may require a wildcard which we'd happily offer.'
Williams, 25, compiled a 12-4 record this season and last played at the US Open.
'I'm determined to return to the top of the rankings and think that preparing for the Australian Open at Hobart will be a great start,' Williams said in a statement.
