Federer, Safin top elite list for Kooyong Classic

Oct 24, 2006, 10:36 GMT

Melbourne - Roger Federer will perfect his form for a run at a third Australian Open title in January when he tunes up at the elite Kooyong Classic.

Organizers Tuesday announced a star-packed field, with the Swiss master and 2004 Melbourne Grand Slam champion Marat Safin atop the entry list at the January 10-13 competition.

The eight-man field offers top invited players a guaranteed set of matches in round-robin format, with play concluding two days before the start of the Open.

Federer, 2004 and 2006 Australian winner, will be playing the event for the fourth consecutive year while Safin will be making his debut.

Safin beat Federer in semi-finals of the 2005 Australian Open, which he won over Lleyton Hewitt.

Also playing will be holder Andy Roddick, Argentine David Nalbandian, Croatia's Ivan Ljubicic, British teenager Andy Murray, Germany's Tommy Haas and Czech Radek Stepanek.

Stepanek and Murray will be making their Kooyong debuts.
