Serena Williams announces July return to tennis
Jun 15, 2006, 14:39 GMT
Cincinnati - Inactive Serena Williams is due to end her injury exile from tennis next month when she plays for the first time since January at a minor WTA event in the American Midwest.
The former world number 1 and seven-time Grand Slam champion has not been on court since losing in the third round of the Australian Open to Daniela Hantuchova.
'I have decided to return to competitive tennis at Cincinnati,' read a statement from Williams, whose fitness and dedication to the game have come in for heavy criticism recently.
'Lately I have been working very hard on making my knee stronger, and that work is progressing well. Barring any setbacks, it is my hope that I will be able to rejoin the WTA at Cincinnati,' she said.
The event, which begins July 17, one week after the end of Wimbledon, will also feature defending champion Patty Schnyder, 2004 French Open champion Anastasia Myskina, and Hantuchova.
