Kuznetsova shocks Sharapova to win Miami Masters
Apr 1, 2006, 19:08 GMT
Miami - Svetlana Kuznetsova shocked a distracted Maria Sharapova 6-4, 6-3 to win the 6.9-million-dollar Miami Masters Saturday in an all-Russian battle.
The 12th-seeded Kuznetsova, 2004 US Open champion, collected her first trophy since Bali, just a week after lifting the New York Grand Slam.
The victory returns Kuznetsova to the Top ten when the WTA rankings are released on Monday.
Sharapova committed 16 forehand errors in the first set and was put off her game by a small plane droning over head with an advertising banner trailing.
The annoyance was finally chased away by a police helicopter. Defeat was the second in Miami for Sharapova after losing in 2005 to Kim Clijsters.
The title marked the sixth for Kuznetsova.
