We'll still go through, says Bayern president Hoeness
Feb 22, 2012, 22:41 GMT
Basel, Switzerland - Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness said he was convinced his side would advance to the quarter-finals of the Champions League despite a late 1-0 defeat at Basel Wednesday.
'I believe 1-0 is a result which opens up every opportunity for us,' Hoeness said.
'I am not at all worried that we won't be able to do it in the return leg. I am 100 per cent certain we will go through and that's what I told the team.'
A late strike from substitute Valentin Stocker gave Swiss champions Basel the advantage to take to Munich for the second leg on March 13 at the Allianz Arena, which will also be hosting the final.
Hoeness's confidence was not wholly shared by Bayern's honorary president Franz Beckenbauer, who said: 'What happened here is worrying because Basel deserved to win the match.'
Coach Jupp Heynckes said his side needed to be calmer and more disciplined, and should have been more aggressive in defending in the lead up to the goal.
'It's an uncomfortable situation, but I have been in these situations before in my coaching career,' he said.
'We lost 1-0 and now we aren't in the ideal position ahead of the second leg.'
