Napoli come from behind to beat Chelsea, CSKA draw with Real

Feb 22, 2012, 6:07 GMT

Berlin - Serie A side Napoli came from behind to beat Chelsea 3-1 in a Champions League knock-out stage match on Tuesday.

In another first leg round of 32 game played earlier on the day, Real Madrid surrendered their 100 per cent record in the competition as a last-gasp goal gave CSKA Moscow a 1-1 draw at home.

In Naples, Juan Mata gave the Blues the lead midway through the first half, but Ezequiel Lavezzi and Edinson Cavani turned things around for the home side before the break.

Lavezzi's second goal in the 64th minute put Napoli in the driving seat ahead of the return leg and will add to the pressure Andre Villas-Boas was already facing ahead of the match.

The Chelsea manager's task in Italy was made more difficult by the injury-forced withdrawal of John Terry on Tuesday. The former England captain will have to undergo a knee operation that could keep him out for two months.

Villas-Boas saw his side take the lead in the 27th minute through Mata, who made the most of a poor Napoli clearance.

But from then on, it was nearly all Napoli, with the home side drawing level in the 38th minute through Lavezzi who was set up by Cavani.

Cavani put his side ahead in first-half injury time after Gokhan Inler pulled the ball back for Cavani to bundle it over the line from close range.

The Uruguayan international also had a part to play in Lavezzi's second, rolling the ball across to his striking partner in the 64th minute.

Napoli could have scored a fourth shortly from the end when Christian Maggio's shot from close range was cleared off the line by substitute Ashley Cole.

In the earlier match played in cold conditions in Moscow, Portuguese international Cristiano Ronaldo gave Real Madrid, who won all six matches in the group phase, the lead midway through the first half in a match that the visitors dominated throughout.

CSKA's reserve goalkeeper Sergei Chepchugov, who was playing in place of injured first choice goalkeeper Igor Akinfeyev, pulled off a number of good saves to deny the La Liga club a second goal.

In front of 75,000 spectators in the Luzhniki stadium, the home side lacked the urgency that would have put Real Madrid under any real pressure and it was against the run of play that Pontus Wernbloom found an equaliser in the third minute of second half injury time.

The Swedish international was on hand to push in Vasil Berezutski's cross after Alan Dzagoev had floated the ball into the area and Berezutski's twin Aleksei headed on to his brother.

Two further first leg round of 32 matches will be played on Wednesday.
