Police arrest 76 ahead of Ajax v Manchester United match
Feb 16, 2012, 16:21 GMT
Amsterdam - A group of 76 Ajax Amsterdam supporters have been arrested on suspicion of seeking a confrontation with Manchester United fans at a Europa League game between the two sides set for later Thursday, police said.
The men were detained on Wednesday under heightened security rules imposed by the Amsterdam mayor.
'We had strong reasons to believe they were seeking confrontation with the English,' said Ad Smit from the Amsterdam police.
Dutch public television (NOS) reported the men were found to have teargas, a pair of brass knuckles, a club and a large amount of narcotics.
In addition, 54 fans of Belgian club Anderlecht were detained in the city centre, all related to potential trouble ahead of the game. dpa fhq bag
