Germany up to second in FIFA rankings, Zambia back in top 50
Feb 15, 2012, 10:15 GMT
Zurich - Germany moved into second place behind Spain in the latest world football rankings issued by the governing body FIFA, while freshly-crowned African champions Zambia are back in the top 50 for the first time in 11 years.
Germany moved ahead of the Netherlands with 1,369 points to the Dutch's 1,359, while Spain retain a big lead with 1,566 points.
While no top 10 team played a match in the past month and changes there came from 'evaluation of matches from previous years' (FIFA), the Africa Cup of Nations brought changes.
Zambia climbed 28 places from 71 to 43 for a first top 50 placing since February 2001 after winning a maiden continental title on Sunday.
Finalists Ivory Coast remain the best Africa team in 15th place, up three. The co-hosts made big gains by reaching the quarter-finals, with Gabon up 46 places to 45th and Equatorial Guinea rising 41 to 110th.
